Transfer Assets

Assets may be transferred to other university departments as needed to align ownership with asset usage.

A capital asset that isn’t being used or isn’t functional can be transferred to the MSU Surplus Store for redeployment or proper disposal. Departments are prohibited from selling or donating items to external (non-MSU) entities. Only the MSU Surplus Store has the authority to process sales or gifts to external entities.

MSU Surplus Store

All assets transferred to the MSU Surplus Store will be subject to one of the following processes:

  • Assets will be made available for purchase by other campus organizations—and the MSU Surplus Store will transfer the assets to the organization, or,
  • Assets will be made available for purchase by the general public, donated, recycled, or disposed of by other means—and the MSU Surplus Store will retire the assets.

Assets transferred to the MSU Surplus Store for disposition will remain in their possession until one of the above processes is completed. The MSU Surplus Store will then update the asset record.
